We've all been told just how bad and evil the Number 13 is. There has even been a string of nasty horror movies named after the naughty number.

Yes - it has been blamed for everything from sunken passenger ships to failed business ventures and lost elections. The more superstitious among us won't even buy a house on the fateful day and forget about a job interview. If it's happening on the 13th - why even waste the gas for that confab?!?

But in the Land of the Suns - and everything else that is holy in Phoenix - the big Number 13 has taken on its own mystical significance. And we don't mean bad news. You see - on Friday the Suns became the first team in the league to reach 13 NBA wins this season. Not bad for a bunch of also- rans who didn't even make the play-offs last year. And the only personnel move they made to achieve this new glory was ditch the biggest man in the league - Shaquille O'Neal - and grab a long distance shooting forward who wasn't wanted anymore by the Portland Trailblazers.

Tip your hat to Channing Frye for hitting more than 46% from the field in a career setting season. Eat your heart out Rip City.

The fast-paced winning record isn't the only attribute the Suns have shown so far. No - a look at the stats proves that - the Suns are more likely to get your girl and leave the Vegas odds guys peeing in their pants as they raid the vault than any other team in the NBA.

Just take a gander at these Suns numbers:

  • The highest scoring team in the NBA - averaging 111.93ppg
  • The highest field goal percentage in the NBA - 50.7%
  • The highest 3-point shooting percentage in the NBA - 44.6%
  • The first team to hit 100 three point shots
  • The second highest number of assists per game in the NBA - 24.75

The offensive frenzy has been accompanied by a shot blocking aptitude that more than compensates for the lack of Shaq in the defensive lane. Good riddance and - the spirit of the holiday - God Bless Cleveland for taking the big lug.

Just compare the Suns average of 5.06 blocks per game with the L.A Lakers mere 4.71 bpg, the Boston Celtics 4.68 bpg, or the Orlando Magic and their paltry 4.43 bpg. Can you see dominance shaping-up?!?

And it isn't the big name guys who are getting it done. No - time to write home and tell the family - because it is the Phoenix Suns.

Does that mean everything is perfect in the Land of the Suns?? No - not even close. You see - Steve Kerr is still the general manager in Phoenix.

In past seasons Kerr has proven to have just the opposite of the Golden Touch. His downbeat forecast for the current season was about as disheartening as an ugly 4th and 25 from your own three yard line. And Kerr's early hints at trading Amar'e Stoudemire - an All-Star forward who has never played anywhere else - were ill-timed and ill-conceived.

Hopefully Coach Alvin Gentry can keep Kerr away from the laboratory where he keeps the magic elixirs. And - if Gentry keeps Kerr away from the eye of newt and other goodies in Alvin's secret room - the Suns may shock the NBA with a little help from old Number 1-3. Talk about breaking Vegas and driving the bookies mad from coast-to-coast.

See ya'.
